WHY POLYBAK?

PolyBak is a single-ply sheet for use as:
  • A backer for balancing substrates faced with laminates or veneers
  • A backer adhered directly to veneers for improved flexibility, strength and stability.
  • An overlay on plywoods and other substrates for improved stability and moisture resistant.

When applied properly, PolyBak :

Improves the balancing and dimensional stability of the laminated substrate.

Reduces the risk of panel warping due to climatic changes.

Has excellent moisture resistance.

Class A flame spread rating.

Excellent tensile strength and flexibility.

Has no added formaldehyde.

Can be painted.

HOW POLYBAK IS MADE

PolyBak is manufactured by impregnating Kraft liner board with a polymer resin using a proprietary system. This resin system contains no formaldehyde. The finished product does not emit any detectable volatile compounds. This characteristic is unique to the PolyBak system as opposed to other typical commercial backers. With proper storage, PolyBak is a stable product with an unlimited shelf life. Polybak should be stored in a cool, dry location.

Laminating Procedures

Polybak is bondable to various substrates, particle board, MDF, etc., using most standard cold setting adhesives such as PVA or contact cement. When laminating, allow the laminate, substrate and PolyBak backer to reach equilibrium moisture before gluing. This usually requires that all materials be exposed to ambient conditions for a minimum of 48 hours (70 F to 75 F; 45-50% RH). Good air circulation in storage and lay up areas is highly recommended. Consult your adhesive manufacturer for adhesive open times, spread rates, curing times and pressure applications.

POLYBAK ULTRA

PolyBak Ultra is Polyback with an integrated heat activated adhesive. The adhesive is made with a thermoplastic-acrylic-polymer with no added formaldehyde. PolyBak Ultra enables veneer and plywood manufacturers to quickly and easily bond PolyBak with a hot press as a backer for veneers, or as an overlay or cross-band for plywood. PolyBak adds stability, strength, and moisture resistance to veneer and plywood, and improves veneer's flexibility.

The adhesive used in PolyBak Ultra forms a strong water-proof bond of the PolyBak to wood surfaces and veneers when hot pressed at 290° - 300°F (143° -149°C) for 3 minutes at 150 PSI (pounds per square inch).

If you are bonding a stack of 10 to 12 sets of veneer on PolyBak all at one time in a hot press, then increase the press time to 10-12 minutes. Keep the temperature and pressure the same at 300°F (149°C) and 150 PSI. The pressure should be relieved two to three times during the pressing of multiple sheets to allow steam to escape.

PolyBak Ultra should be stored in a dry location below 100°F (38°C) without excessive pressure applied to the stack of sheets.
